Can thieves get around Apple's "Find My Phone" feature?

Can thieves get around Apple's "Find My Phone" feature? I had my iPhone 4S stolen and had "Find My Phone" turned on. What happens if they reset my phone or install a custom rom? How easy is it to get away from this feature?

Very easy. Find My iPhone is not a deterrent to anybody who steals your iPhone who has any real knowledge of iOS. Just a few examples of ways in which the feature can be effectively compromised:

• If you haven't protected your iPhone with a passcode, the thief can simply go in and turn if off under your iCloud settings as easily as you could.
• The feature only operates at the OS level. It will still be active after simplyrebooting the iPhone, but if the iPhone is completely erased and returned to factory settings, the Find My iPhone feature goes away with it. Note, however, that if you've password protected your iPhone it will be difficult fo a thief to erase your device until they can connect it to a computer running iTunes and perform a "Restore" operation. This also applies if you do a remote wipe of your iPhone, of course, which is effectively the same thing.
• The feature relies on a data connection. Taking out your SIM card and being away from any pre-configured Wi-Fi hotspot (e.g. one that you had already setup your iPhone to access before it was stolen) will render the feature ineffective. This also makes the feature considerably less effective on an iPod touch or a Wi-Fi only iPad.
• Obviously as well if the iPhone is turned OFF the feature will not work.
• If you've set a PIN on your SIM card, your iPhone will lose access to the cellular network as soon as it's rebooted. The SIM PIN is a good security feature that -- when combined with a properly-configured passcode -- will prevent a thief from using your cellular account to rack up a large bill for you, but by the same logic it will prevent your iPhone itself from using your cellular account until the PIN is entered.
• Likewise, if you call your cellular carrier and cancel your service -- usually a good idea after any phone has been stolen -- your iPhone will no longer be able to access the cellular data network, and "Find my iPhone" then becomes about as effective as it would be on an iPod touch, requiring a Wi-Fi network in order to connect to Apple's servers and report its location.

These last two points mean that a clever thief could take your iPhone and immediately turn it off or remove the SIM card until they can get it to a computer to erase it. Once it's erased all bets are off -- it's effectively not "your" iPhone anymore as far as iOS is concerned.

Note that all of the same restrictions apply to the Remote Wipe feature as well. If Apple's servers can't communicate with the iPhone, if "Find My iPhone" has been switched off manually or if the device has already been wiped, then "Remote Wipe" (and remotely setting a lock code) won't work either.

One positive note is that all of the remote operations (find, wipe, lock) are queued by Apple's servers, so even if your iPhone is unreachable when you initially try, they will be processed when (or if) the device comes back online -- the remote wipe/lock will simply be performed at the first opportunity, while a find request can send you an e-mail once the iPhone is located and the web page will display the last known location.

iOS 6 now includes a new "Lost Mode" that provides the additional ability to trackthe location of your device once it's been flagged as "lost." Previously, you could receive a notification once the device had popped up somewhere, but that would only show the location at that particular point in time. With iOS 6, once "Lost Mode" has been engaged, the system begins actively tracking the device, which will allow you to see a history of all of the places where the device has appeared and moved to since "Lost Mode" was first engaged.

Update (2012-11-16): Added information on SIM PINs and active cellular accounts and how this affects the process, as well as "Lost Mode" on iOS 6.

I don't received calls from strangers as Corina is the only person who contact me cos of some Sim Card issue happening at Hello...

No queue during that time but it takes an hour to collect the Sim Card. Singtel Customer Service, Mickail is reading my file record and issue a document for my Sim Card. Everything done and finally I will be able to get away from the Hello...!!

Feel like crying as I never really cry out loud ever since Monday Evening...!!

DONT understand how in the world Apples logic works on this app/service they offer.

They let you put a passcode on your iDevice and it will require it to access it. HOWEVER?!?!?

It does not require you to enter the passcode to TURN THE PHONE OFF?

I mean WHAT the helllllllll? Apple, by not requiring that the passcode is entered to shut the phone off you are ENABLING THIEF'S!!! Because this app is WORTHLESS if the THIEF TURN THE PHONE OFF. ONE SIMPLE F***k LINE OF CODE!!!! SAD

Well the find my iphone app shows a map and all you mainly have to do is go to google maps and look for the same location that is on their and click that little yellow guy on the side and place him over the location and an address should come up and you can type their address into like yellow pages and get their phone number if it's in there. :) I hope I helped.

My phone was stolen at Dave and Buster's when I took a trip to Orlando 2 weeks ago and I tracked it with this app, but the person who took it turned it off pretty damn quick. So I went back to my condo and I finally got the location of my iPhone and I went to google maps on my laptop and got their address and their number and it turns out a kid took it and sold it, but got scared that I tracked it and returned it to D&Bs and today I just got my $500 iPhone back because of this amazing app. :)

Yeah, but the guy who stole it isn't gonna steal something and just leave it off.. He has to turn it on at some point or at least the person the guy sells it to has to. Best of luck dude, hope you find it.

How to Use Find My iPhone to Locate Lost or Stolen iPhone

We all hope to never need this article since, if we do, it means there's a good chance that our iPhone (or iPod touch or iPad) has been stolen. If it has been, though, and if you configured it to use Find My iPhone before it was stolen, you may be able to get it back--or at least prevent the thief from getting at your personal data. These instructions will help you use Find My iPhone to locate a lost or stolen iPhone.

Here's How:

1. As noted above, you need to have set up Find My iPhone on your device prior to it getting lost or stolen. If you did, go to https://www.icloud.com/ in your web browser (there's also a Find My iPhone app [opens iTunes link] that you can install on another iOS device to track it. These instructions are for using the web-based tool).
   Log in using the account you used when setting up Find My iPhone. This may be your Apple ID/iTunes account.
2. When you log in, Find My iPhone will immediately begin trying to locate your device. You'll see onscreen messages as it works. If the device is turned off, the map will display its last known location, not necessarily its current location. When it's turned back on, the map will update.
   If it finds your device, it will zoom in on the map and show the location of the device using a blue dot. When this happens, you can zoom in or out of the map, and view it in map, satellite, and hybrid modes, like any Google Map.
3. When your device is found, a window will pop up over the blue dot (if it disappears because you clicked elsewhere on the page, just click the blue dot again to get it back). Click the window and you'll see the various options you have.
   The first option is to send a message to the device or have it play a sound. You can send a message--for instance, letting someone know how to return the device to you--that will appear onscreen like a text message.
   Sending a sound to the device is best when you think you've misplaced your device in the house or office and want help finding it.
4. You can also click the "lock" button. This will allow you to remotely lock the device's screen and set a passcode (even if you hadn't previously used a passcode) that will prevent the thief from using your device or accessing your personal data.
   To do this, click the "lock" button, enter the 4-digit lock code you want to use twice, and then click "lock" again. Your device will now be inaccessible to the thief unless they guess your code.
   1. For even greater security, you can also remotely delete all data from the device. To do this, click the "wipe" button. There, you'll see a warning (basically, don't do this unless you're absolutely sure you want to). Click the box that says you understand what you're doing and click the "Erase All Data" button. This will delete all your data, preventing the thief from accessing it.
      If you get the device back, you can restore your data from backup.
   2. If you think your device is on the move, click the curved arrow at the top right corner of the screen to refresh and get a new fix on your device's location.

Right now the person never switch on my iPhone 5 yet, as long as I know the location of my phone or I send message for the person to contact me, if he call, I know it...!!

I feel rather happy cos nobody can simply locate me now...!!

I have a few days peace of mind as I wonder how many SMS I will missed when I go and collect my Sim Card at Hello Shop on... ...!!

Have not decide whether I should turn-on my line at this time...

I am rather sure that I won't missed my incoming calls as I missed my iPhone 5 now...

I send an alert tone to my iPhone everyday from Find My iPhone...

This is the last thing that I can do for my stolen phone now...!!
